When Sir Nigel Gresley identified that the GNR needed locomotives to work the short-haul coal traffic in the West Riding of Yorkshire, he designed a new class of 0-6-0 Tank Engine which had side tanks instead of saddle tanks. He wanted to ensure the locos were also suitable for shunting. The long side tanks werew also intended to increase the loco's adhesive weight, which was particularly useful on steeply graded lines. The side tanks were sloped forward to avoid obstructing the driver's view - hence the unique shape of these locos. Apertures were also provided to enable easy access to the loco's gears and driving wheels. The long side-tanks would inspire the nickname "Submarine". Gresley had 40 spare boilers from the re-building of the GNR Class L1 locos and used these in the construction of the new side tank locos between 1913 and 1922. The GNR classified all these locos as the J23 Class, but the LNER divided them into the J51 Class (with smaller boilers) and the J50 Class (with larger boilers). The LNER then continued with the construction of Class J50, building a further 62 prior to 1939, only the first ten of which were given second hand boilers. The Class J51 locomotives were also rebuilt to class J50 between 1929 and 1935.
