'Clerestory' is an architectural term which refers to high windows, above eye level. Their purpose is to bring outside light and / or fresh air to the interior. Historically 'clerestory' denoted an upper level in a Roman Basilica or Gothic Church - the walls of which rise above the rooflines of the lower aisles and are pierced with windows. Clerestory coaches were therefore named for the row of windows in the roof of the Coach.
Re-live the ‘Golden Age of Steam’ and all the Romance of the Great Western Railway when exquisite Coaches such as these Superb GWR Clerestory Coaches graced across the British Countryside!
